Kitani stared at the drawing. It was impressive, the tentacles carefully detailed right down to the wicked hooks sported by each suction cup.

Her tablet played her favorite iTunes as she read. The book was ancient, bound in leather. According to Cara, it featured a comprehensive list of many Cryptids. Including one of Kitani’s favorites—the Kraken.

The walls surrounding her were lined with books easily as old as the one she perused. The Cryptid council had outlawed the recording of lore almost one hundred years ago and had even gone so far as to destroy many of the existing libraries.

Not all had agreed with the policy. The Watchers, the small group to whom Cara belonged, had rescued what they could.

Cara had converted the basement into an extensive library to house her collection. And she’d set Kitani up there with a stack of selected books to peruse.

And learn from.

Kitani checked her watch. Ice’s appointment had been over for an hour, so where were Kade and Cody? Cody had been unreachable by text. It had been Neil who had texted her that everyone was okay. And that they were coming to Cara’s, but they were taking a while to get here.

Her phone buzzed.

Hey, Kitcat.

Ryan! Her thumbs flew.

Have you heard what happened?

Yeah. They aren’t there?

Not yet. Cara left to guide them through her confusion zone. They should be here by now.

I’m sure they’re almost there.

What happened?

Ice offered to give Kade intel on the Dire who killed Cas in exchange for Kade taking him out.

Kitani stared at the tiny screen. Why?

Apparently this dude is honing in on Ice’s action.

Kitani stiffened. We are not his private thug squad.

That is what your brother told him. But that isn’t why he and Cody are coming to Cara’s. Cody told your brother that you need training.

She swallowed. How’d it go?

Not sure. Kade said he’d come to Cara’s with Cody.

A door opened above. Cara’s piping tones carried down the stairs, along with a deeper voice that sent a thrill through her.

Cody.

She rose, still typing. They’re here.

Don’t let Cody do anything dumb.

Dumb? Unsure, she typed, Okay. Then she pocketed her phone and jogged up the stairs. She was three steps from the top when something growled. She’d know that sound anywhere.

Her brother. And he sounded damned pissed off.

Kitani emerged into a tense standoff in the kitchen. Cara was making tea. Kade was on one side of the table, standing with his arms crossed and a thunderous expression on his face. Cody leaned on the opposite counter. His pose was deliberately casual, but she didn’t think he was as relaxed as he appeared.

She couldn’t blame him. Kade looked fit to kill.

She opened her mouth to ask about Ice, but Kade spoke first.

“Cody here thinks he can train you,” he growled.

Kitani’s heart accelerated. Cody wanted to train her? He’d said she needed it, but not that he’d do it himself.

“I don’t think,” Cody corrected. “I know.”

Cara spoke from where she poured boiling water into the teapot. “Cody is a damned good fighter,” she pointed out, as though discussing the weather.
